Why "Follow Your Passion" Career Advice Can Leave You Financially Stressed
The well-meaning guidance that's confusing mid-career professionals (and what works instead)
Hi Reader,
"Everyone tells me to follow my passion, but I'm more confused than ever about what that actually means."
If you've found yourself nodding along to this sentiment, you're experiencing something I see with so many mid-career professionals. The advice sounds inspiring, but it often lacks the practical foundation needed to make meaningful career transitions.
I've just published a new article where I share my own journey of discovering why "follow your passion" can be problematic career guidance – and what actually creates sustainable career fulfilment instead.
The story begins with my teenage self, sitting across from a high school careers counsellor who confidently told me, "Jane, pursue your passion. The money will follow." It felt like wisdom from a movie, until reality hit after my university studies.
What I discovered was that passion alone isn't enough. True career satisfaction requires something much more thoughtful and strategic.
In this article, I introduce you to the Japanese concept of ikigai – a framework that considers not just what you love, but also what you're skilled at, what the world needs, and what you can be compensated for. It's like the difference between trying to bake a cake with only butter (because you love butter) versus having all the essential ingredients.
This approach is particularly valuable if you're considering a career transition while managing real-world responsibilities like mortgages, family commitments, and the lifestyle you've built.
I hope this perspective offers you both clarity and practical direction for your own career journey.
